The Place with the Longest Name…in the World!

When Joel found out we would be near the place with the longest name in the world, well, that was all she wrote. So, we spent an hour and a half (each way!) driving small, narrow, one-lane roads, (often under construction), each way, just to take a picture by the sign. (did I mention it was 1 1/2 hours EACH way! sigh)

We passed sooo many cows, and sheep…(which was actually kinda cool)
Narrow roads…and we’re driving on the other side of the road down here!
Often under construction
Finally, we made it!
Parking is free
And the whole reason you come here is to see this sign

“Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu holds the world record for being the longest place name on the entire planet, at the length of 85 characters.” – Atlas Obscura

“Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu” is the name of this place

“This 1,000-foot hill on the North Island of New Zealand is named after Tamatea, who was a legendary Maori explorer who traversed across the vast lands of New Zealand. To honor his exploits, the Maori people named a hill after him, and to show their true adoration, they used an entire sentence. The 85-character toponym translates literally to “the summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one.” – Atlas Obscura

Playing around the sign
Fun with the sign
More pictures with the sign, because, why not.

“…this hill remains the Guinness Book of World Records leader for longest place name, and has become a tourist attraction for geography and word nerds from across the globe.” – Atlas Obscura

Mangamaire Manaaki

So, that’s it. After going to the place with the longest name in the world, we are officially ‘word nerds’. Stay tuned to see what Joel finds for us to do next.

Who does what here? Honestly, it’s really a good collaboration. We both decide where to go and plan the trip together. Once at our destination, Jeri takes most of the pictures and edits them for our website, though Joel has a much longer arm and is better at taking our selfies. Once the pictures are done then Jeri writes the posts and Joel edits them before they go live. Joel is also the IT guy when things go wrong (but what could possible go wrong when a computer is involved?)
