Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

We stayed at the Leland House and Rochester Hotel in the heart of the historic district of Durango, Colorado. From Durango it takes about an hour to drive out to the park. The historic district of Durango is a great place to explore with many restaurants, bars, and shops within a few short blocks.

A short drive away from Durango is the Mesa Verde National Park. “This park protects some of the best-preserved Ancestral Puebloan archaeological sites in the United States.” – Wikipedia

There are several hiking tours led by the Park Rangers at Mesa Verde. We opted for the tour of the Cliff Palace, one of the largest cliff dwellings in the park.

The Cliff Palace
Tours provide an up close view of these ancient sites. It’s absolutely amazing to walk through them.

We started at the top and had to hike/climb down about 100 feet to reach the ruins.

We began at the top of this ridge
We had to walk a short hike then climb down about 100 feet using these
Happy we made it

We climbed out on the opposite side of the cliff. It was a long hike back to the top.

After the uneven steps there were three ladders to climb (you can see the 1st over my shoulder)
Relaxing after a great day exploring Mesa Verde. You can see our hotel across the street.

Who does what here? Honestly, it’s really a good collaboration. We both decide where to go and plan the trip together. Once at our destination, Jeri takes most of the pictures and edits them for our website, though Joel has a much longer arm and is better at taking our selfies. Once the pictures are done then Jeri writes the posts and Joel edits them before they go live. Joel is also the IT guy when things go wrong (but what could possible go wrong when a computer is involved?)
