Jacksonville, FL

In 1564 the French attempted to establish a colonial settlement along the St. Johns River in Florida.

While the exact location of Fort Caroline is unknown, the National Park Service has established a memorial on the northern edge of Jacksonville, FL in an area near the point the French first landed.

From the visitor center it is a short walk (quarter mile-ish) to the fort.

Along the way is a recreation of a native Timucuan village.

The entrance to the fort is guarded by huge doors (maybe 10–12 feet tall) with a cute little door cut into it.

The fort itself wasn’t that big. I kept looking around and wondering how so many people (about 200) lived here.

Bonus: This visitor center serves both the Fort Caroline National Memorial and the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, within which the Fort sits…2 stamps for your Park book!

Who does what here? Honestly, it’s really a good collaboration. We both decide where to go and plan the trip together. Once at our destination, Jeri takes most of the pictures and edits them for our website, though Joel has a much longer arm and is better at taking our selfies. Once the pictures are done then Jeri writes the posts and Joel edits them before they go live. Joel is also the IT guy when things go wrong (but what could possible go wrong when a computer is involved?)
