Atlanta, Georgia

We started our day in downtown Atlanta at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park. This park consists of several buildings including Martin Luther King Jr.‘s childhood home and the original Ebenezer Baptist Church, the church where King was baptized and both his father Martin Luther King Sr. and he were pastors.

This park also contains the grave site and memorial for Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King within the “I Have a Dream” International World Peace Rose Garden.

Joel checking out the Civil Rights Walk of Fame. We were able to step onto each footprint and compare ourselves to each person’s shoe prints.

Between the MLK Jr. NHP and the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library is a 1 1/2 mile walking trail. We didn’t know about this so we continued on in our car. The Carter Library was an interesting museum with so many unexpected pieces. It took us longer than we expected to go through it because we read everything.

The Oval Office as it looked during Jimmy Carter’s presidency
Salt II Pen
5 presidents signed this rare photo and baseball

Finally, we ended our day with a quick stop at the CDC. Joel discovered they have a museum on their campus and we were interested to see what was there. The museum is free though everyone entering must show ID. We also discovered they conduct a search of all vehicles entering the campus. It was a bit intense.

Our rental car is searched
A “lung” used during the polio epedemic
Driving back to our hotel GPS took us right through the Emory campus.

Who does what here? Honestly, it’s really a good collaboration. We both decide where to go and plan the trip together. Once at our destination, Jeri takes most of the pictures and edits them for our website, though Joel has a much longer arm and is better at taking our selfies. Once the pictures are done then Jeri writes the posts and Joel edits them before they go live. Joel is also the IT guy when things go wrong (but what could possible go wrong when a computer is involved?)
