We began our day with a detour to the BMW factory in Greer, South Carolina. The Zentrum factory and museum provides tours of their factory floor and has a small museum and gift shop attached.
The Cowpens National Battlefield is about 30 min. away. It preserves a major battlefield of the American Revolutionary War. The visitor center shows a short 18-min film on the battle. Ironically, the film lasts just a bit longer than the actual battle lasted. (Incidentally, Cowpens is so named because the soldiers were told to meet where the cows were penned).
Finally, we drove about 30 more min. to King’s Mtn. National Battlefield Park. This park’s history is intertwined with the history of Cowpens. This park commemorates a pivotal and significant victory by Americans Patriots over the American Loyalists.
A one and a half mile paved trail leads from the visitor’s center, around the base of the mountain. It follows along the Patriot lines and ascends to the crest where the Loyalists were positioned. The trail passes several monuments, large and small, the earliest dating from 1815, as well as Patrick Ferguson‘s grave, giving a good sense of the battleground.
