About 90 miles outside of Las Vegas on the border between Nevada and Arizona you will find Mesquite. While the town has grown quite a bit in the last 30 years there are still many trails nearby to take your truck off-road.
As avid off-roaders, we’ve run this trail many times and on this day it was passable with the right gear on your vehicle (lockers, a lift, etc.). We were here in June, 2012, after a winter of heavy rain so the trail was tougher than it had been.
Many of the trucks had a hard time getting over these rocks. What isn’t evident in this picture is that the trail has a steep drop off of about 75-100 feet down on the left side.
Here’s Joel showing off what his toy can do. Yeah, I married an adrenaline junkie who likes to live on the edge. He often quotes an old bumper sticker, “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much room.”
Many of us passengers decided to hike instead. I’m not a fan of the feeling you get when the truck is tipping on it’s side. I prefer to be on my own two feet. So, for me, that meant I hiked about 10 miles while Joel drove.
This was the end of the trail we were on. Five years earlier this trail was rough but passable. On this day, not so much. Amazing what Mother Nature can do. There was a large pool of water below the 5 foot rock that I’m standing on and even more water behind me.
We found another trail that eventually took us to the top.
Another fun day in the desert.
